Harrell/Conrad Memorial Scholarship

Joye in the Community by Joye Law Firm

Ken Harrell’s parents, Wayne and Betty Harrell, present Nicholas Ford with the Harrell/Conrad Memorial Scholarship award.

Joye Law Firm's managing partner, Ken Harrell, started this annual scholarship program, which is named after Mr. Harrell’s grandparents, to recognize graduates of his alma mater, Sussex Central High School in Sussex, Virginia. Each year, a graduating senior receives a $5,000 scholarship to assist with college expenses.

“I started the scholarship because the county has a large agricultural industry, and local scholarship opportunities are limited,” said Harrell, who graduated from the high school in 1981. “I want to help recognize students who are committed to making a positive difference and achieving academic excellence.”

This year's winner is Nicholas Ford, who is ranked 19th in his graduating class. While keeping his high GPA, he also participated in basketball, track and field, Future Educators of America, and the National Honors Society. On top of school work, Nicholas also served as a captain and staff sergeant in the school’s Army Junior ROTC program and even found time to work part-time at a sandwich shop. He will be attending Averett University in Danville, Virginia, and is a future Averett Cougars basketball player.
